The ubiquitous recorder, that many of us had to learn in primary school, can often be found at the bottom of a drawer or in a storage box somewhere. And these sluggish instruments were often stored in a cloth bag… or was it a cocoon?  Perhaps the common recorder was just the larvae of something much more exquisite.
The recorder is also a gateway instrument, leading burgeoning musicians to blossom on other instruments.
